Angry Audio USB Analog Audio Gizmo

No, no, no one is being called a whiner! Anyone using computer audio has likely encountered the dreaded high-pitched whine rising up out of the noise floor. The expectation might be that digital audio should be perfect, but the ears do not lie. That annoying whine is heard.

That unwanted whistle is identified as a symptom of a ground loop between the computer and the audio equipment via the sound card. It can be especially pronounced with the unbalanced audio found on many computer sound cards and motherboards. Even balanced audio interfaces can whine. Traditional ground loop suppression techniques, such as ground lifting, do not always help.

One way to eliminate the problem involves replacing the sound cards (and motherboard audio) with a USB interface. This relocates the audio circuits outside of the computer’s internal noisy environment. And if it’s balanced audio, it’s even better. Surprisingly, that digital whine may still appear, even on external USB interfaces, due to a ground loop. The problem has even been observed on the built-in USB interfaces of several expensive broadcast consoles. How is the whining stopped?

Enter the Angry Audio USB Analog Audio Gizmo. Engineered so that the power, ground, and data lines between the computer and audio circuitry are all galvanically isolated, a ground loop is simply not possible. While it costs more to build it this way, this approach is not seen on cheap USB interfaces. But it’s worth it!

In addition to solving ground loop issues, other limitations found in other audio interfaces have also been addressed. The audio inputs and outputs are fully balanced and capable of signal levels up to +24dBu, meeting professional audio standards. The audio connections are on RJ45 connectors in the StudioHub+ format, making it compatible with plants using StudioHub. For those not using StudioHub, StudioHub XLR adapters are included in the box.

The entire device is powered from the computer’s USB port, with no external wall warts required, simplifying deployment. Plugging into a USB port starts the device immediately, with the USB cable included. The USB Analog Audio Gizmo can be placed anywhere audio needs to be routed into or out of a computer. Being class-compliant, no special drivers are needed. When plugged in, the computer (Windows, MacOS, Linux) will recognize it as a sound device, allowing setup with a few clicks.

The product features a no-frills aesthetic, focusing on creating the simplest, most reliable, best-sounding device available for getting analog +4dBu audio in and out of a computer. It is built for the rough realities of broadcast studios, with a virtually indestructible powder-coated steel enclosure and convenient mounting tabs for easy installation under tables or inside cabinets. Premium components with a generous design margin ensure years of flawless 24/7 operation. Like all Angry Audio products, the USB Analog Audio Gizmo comes with a 30-day “love it or return it for a full refund” guarantee, allowing for risk-free purchase.

ProFM Broadcast | Angry AudioAdmit it… you love radio. Over-the-air or internet, live or podcast; it doesn’t matter. Getting radio content to your audience is both thrill and challenge. Oh, you’ve sweat a lot from hard work and worry. And come up with clever solutions that would make MacGyver envious. And all the weekends and holidays you’ve sacrificed… if that’s not love, what is it? I love radio too. I spent the last 25 years designing and building studio products – mostly mixing consoles – for PR&E, Telos, Axia and Lawo. If you’re in radio, you’ve likely encountered my designs. Along the way I’ve visited your studios. Heard your war-stories. Learned a lot. And in all those stories there’s one takeaway: details matter. Sure, we usually pay the most attention to the big-ticket gear, like consoles, transmitters and processors. But have you ever noticed that you can spend a disproportionate amount of time trying to figure out answers to small problems those big products don’t solve? Problems that escalate fast when left unaddressed. Maybe you just need an extra input for a smartphone. Or an automated way to handle an emergency alert. A custom mix to record phone calls. An amplifier for a long cable. Maybe you’re chasing ground-loop hum, or trying to make a PC sound card sound better. Like you, I sweat the details. That’s why I started Angry Audio: to make products that solve these nagging problems. Products that allow you to build systems that do what you want, the way you want. Our products – we call them audio gadgets – are each laser-focused on addressing one or two details. They are inexpensive and easy to use. And, because radio can be rough, they’re damned near indestructible too. I have to confess: I am a bit of a fanatic for sound quality. Our audio gadgets all deliver the kind of transparent audio performance you’d expect to find in the most discerning recording studio. Some have told me this is overkill for radio. I disagree. The tools you use to create and deliver compelling radio should be just as sharp as those used to master music. One last thing: please bookmark our site, and visit us often. We have more than a dozen gadgets in development and will be launching new ones every few months. Sooner or later, we’re going to launch a gadget that solves a nagging problem for you. Which might just help you get home for dinner on time for a change. You gotta love that. Michael “Catfish” Dosch Angry Audio
