Silence Detector also called: Dead air / Radio silence/ watchdog is used in the Radio Broadcast world.

To Monitor Radio Broadcasts: These devices continuously monitor radio broadcasts for dead air or long periods of silence. This ensures that radio broadcasters can quickly identify and, if necessary, address technical problems.

Warning for silence: If it is quiet (dead air), a Silence detector can send a warning. A warning can consist of an email or text message. Actions or commands can also be executed when silence is detected.
You can also switch to another audio source or automatically start an audio source from the Silence detection. So that silence is kept to a minimum.

Also regulatory compliance: In many broadcasting jurisdictions, regulatory agencies impose requirements on the maximum allowable duration of silence or dead air during broadcasts. Silence detectors help broadcasters comply with these regulations by monitoring and minimizing instances of prolonged silence.

Radio silence can cause financial problems: Because it affects radio stations’ main sources of revenue, such as advertising revenue and subscriptions, and can undermine listener confidence, leading to a decline in listenership. So also a reason to choose a Watch Dog.

And emergency monitoring: They are critical when broadcasting in emergency situations, such as severe weather conditions or public safety announcements. By detecting silence or loss of sound, these detectors ensure that emergency messages and warnings are broadcast without interruption to inform the public.
